Thailand's Khao Sok
About Thailand's Khao Sok
Khao Sok National Park protects 739 square kilometers of southern Thailand's largest area of virgin rainforest, older and more diverse than the Amazon. The dramatic landscape features towering limestone karst formations, deep valleys, and Cheow Lan Lake created by a dam but now supporting unique floating raft house accommodations. This ancient ecosystem survived when similar forests elsewhere perished during ice ages. The park harbors wild elephants, tigers, leopards, sun bears, and over 300 bird species including hornbills. The world's largest flower, Rafflesia, blooms sporadically on the forest floor. Gibbons call through the canopy while flying lizards glide between trees. The lake ecosystem supports unique fish species and provides spectacular scenery. Conservation combines strict protection of core areas with sustainable tourism. Floating raft houses on the lake minimize land impact while providing income for local communities. Former poachers work as wildlife guides. Despite challenges from development pressure, Khao Sok maintains remarkable biodiversity through community involvement and tourism revenue.
