About Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park protects the Rwandan portion of the Virunga Mountains, home to approximately one-third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. This 160 square kilometer park represents one of conservation's greatest success stories, with mountain gorilla numbers increasing due to intensive protection and community engagement. The park's five volcanoes create dramatic landscapes. Beyond the famous mountain gorillas, the park shelters golden monkeys, forest elephants, buffalo, and over 200 bird species. The montane rainforest and bamboo zones support unique Albertine Rift endemics. Dian Fossey's pioneering research and conservation work here brought global attention to mountain gorilla conservation. Conservation success results from revenue sharing with local communities, intensive anti-poaching efforts, veterinary interventions, and strict tourism management. Gorilla tourism permits cost $1,500, with limited daily visitors ensuring minimal disturbance while generating substantial conservation funding. Former poachers now work as guides. The model demonstrates how high-value, low-impact tourism can save endangered species.
