Pakistan's Deosai Plains
About Pakistan's Deosai Plains
Deosai National Park protects one of the highest plateaus in the world at an average elevation of 4,114 meters. This 3,000 square kilometer wilderness in northern Pakistan is known as the 'Land of Giants' for its vast scale and megafauna. The plateau transforms into a flower-filled paradise during the brief summer, earning its other name - 'Roof of the World.' The plains provide critical habitat for the endangered Himalayan brown bear, with Deosai supporting one of the last viable populations. Golden marmots, snow leopards, and ibex also inhabit the area. During summer, millions of wildflowers carpet the plateau in spectacular displays. The ecosystem represents unique high-altitude adaptations. Conservation focuses on protecting brown bears from hunting while managing grazing by nomadic herders. The harsh climate naturally limits visitation to summer months. Community-based conservation involves local communities in protection and tourism. Despite accessibility challenges, Deosai demonstrates successful species conservation in extreme environments through community engagement.
