About North Cascades National Park

North Cascades National Park Complex preserves the most glaciated area in the lower 48 states outside Alaska. Over 300 glaciers cling to jagged peaks in this vertical wilderness where mountains rise directly from sea level to over 9,000 feet. The dramatic topography creates diverse ecosystems from temperate rainforest to alpine meadows. Often called the 'American Alps,' the park remains one of the wildest places in the continental U.S. Grizzly bears persist in remote valleys while wolverines patrol high ridges. Mountain goats navigate near-vertical terrain above turquoise lakes fed by glacial melt. The park's extreme topography and weather create barriers preserving wilderness character. Limited road access keeps visitation low, preserving solitude for backcountry adventurers. The North Cascades Highway provides spectacular views but 95% of the park remains trail-less wilderness. Climbers tackle challenging peaks while backpackers explore pristine valleys. This rugged landscape demands respect but rewards the prepared with unparalleled alpine splendor. The park protects a complete ecosystem where wildness dominates.
