About Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park encompasses over 1 million acres of pristine wilderness in the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, where the Rocky Mountains meet the Great Plains in northwest Montana. The park preserves a spectacular landscape sculpted by ancient glaciers, featuring over 700 miles of trails, 175 mountains, and 762 lakes. Together with Canada's Waterton Lakes National Park, it forms the world's first International Peace Park, symbolizing the peace and friendship between two nations. The park protects one of the most intact ecosystems in the temperate regions of the world, supporting all of its original native plant and animal species including grizzly bears, wolves, mountain goats, and wolverines. Over 1,000 plant species and hundreds of animal species thrive across diverse habitats from prairie grasslands to alpine meadows. The park's 26 remaining glaciers, though reduced from 150 in the late 1800s, continue to shape the landscape and serve as indicators of climate change. Glacier implements comprehensive conservation strategies including wildlife corridor protection, native species monitoring, and climate change research. Managing over 3 million annual visitors, the park uses vehicle reservations, shuttle systems, and backcountry permits to protect wilderness values. Research programs monitor glacier retreat, wildlife populations, and ecosystem health while restoration efforts focus on native plant communities and aquatic ecosystems.
