Cambodia's Cardamom Mountains
About Cambodia's Cardamom Mountains
The Central Cardamom Mountains form Southeast Asia's largest remaining rainforest wilderness, covering over 4,000 square kilometers. This biodiversity hotspot remained largely unexplored until recently due to remoteness and past conflicts. Now innovative conservation programs protect this critical ecosystem while supporting local communities through employment and sustainable development. The mountains harbor Asian elephants, sun bears, clouded leopards, and the critically endangered Siamese crocodile. Over 450 bird species include endemic varieties. Rivers support endangered fish species while the forest contains numerous plants used in traditional medicine. Many areas remain scientifically unexplored, likely hiding undiscovered species. Conservation employs former poachers and loggers as rangers, providing alternative livelihoods while utilizing their forest knowledge. Community-based ecotourism offers multi-day treks and river expeditions. The Wildlife Alliance's conservation programs demonstrate effective protection through community engagement. Despite pressure from development, the Cardamoms remain a wilderness sanctuary.
